Wembley Canadians Ice Hockey v Wembley Lions Sheet 1935/36
Canada 1930s Ice Hockey Memorabilia.
1935/36 WEMBLEY CANADIANS & WEMBLEY LIONS PLAYER AUTOGRAPHS FACSIMILE SHEET
A really unusual and rare 81 year old piece of ice hockey memorabilia from the ‘Golden Age’ of British ice hockey.
It is a single sheet (24.2cm x 18.2cm) of facsimile autographs for the entire Wembley Canadians and Wembley Lions squads competing in the inaugural English National League during the 1935/36 season.
Research has revealed that this sheet was only inserted into the first programme of the 1935/36 season, which was the game between the Wembley Lions and the Wembley Canadians on 10 October 1935 at the Empire Pool.
It contains no less than 23 crisp autographs of the players, 5 of whom went on to be members of the famous 13 man Great Britain squad, which shocked the ice hockey world by winning the 1936 Winter Olympics (and World and European Championships as part of the combined Tournament) at Garmisch-Partenkirchen in pre-war Germany.
The following autographs are on the sheet – GB squad players are identified by an asterisk (*)beside their names:
WEMBLEY LIONS
WEMBLEY CANADIANS
The Wembley Canadians actually only existed for 2 seasons, from 1934 – 1936, after moving from their previous home at the Grosvenor House Hotel in West London, and changing their name from the
Grosvenor House Canadians.
At the end of the 1935/36 season, the Wembley Canadians changed their name again, and became the Wembley Monarchs.
Therefore, Wembley Canadians memorabilia from those 2 seasons is increasingly difficult to find, and rarely comes up for sale.
