Melrose Rugby 1930’s Programme.

The programme is an original from the 45th Melrose Sevens held on 11th April 1931.

The programme has 8 pages including the front cover, competition rules, the timetable for the day, the draw, team lists, athletic races entrants, previous winners and the band programme.

Despite its age and clearly having been well used on the day, the programme is intact and still held by its single central stable, although there is a tear on a crease at the top left of the front cover outside the printed area. It has (now fairly faint) annotations in pencil of the results of each of the rounds up until the final (between Melrose and Hawick) although the actual score for that is not shown.

The tournament was actually won by the home team. The programme has clearly been folded and unfolded several times during the day so shows significant fold creases particularly on the central pages with the annotated draw and team lists. The worst of these are on the team list page where some small holes have developed although fortunately these have not damaged the names on the team lists themselves. There is wear and some rusting round the staple.

Although the Rugby tournament was the main event, the sports day as a whole was much wider with place kicking, drop kicking and dribbling competitions, a 100 yards race (3 heats + final) and a 440 yards race all taking place before the rugby; and a mile race between the semi-finals and final. The Galashiels Town’s Band provided the musical entertainment and Tea (1/3d) was available from the marquees run by the British Women’s Temperance Association.
