Streatham Ice Hockey v Canada 1949
1940s Ice Hockey Memorabilia.
INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE MATCH
1 January 1949 at Streatham Ice Rink.
A really unusual piece of UK Ice Hockey ephemera – a programme from the 1949 International Challenge Game between Streatham and Canada, represented by the famous Sudbury Wolves club, who were in their final preparations before representing Canada in the 1949 World Championships in Sweden, in which they finished 2nd.
This programme is from the ‘Golden Era’ of British Post-War Ice Hockey in the late 1940’s.
The game was played at Streatham Ice Rink – a building that was opened in 1931, but sadly lost as an ice hockey venue in 2011.
With a seating capacity of around 1,200 + standing room, the Streatham Ice Rink was one of the smaller rinks in London, when compared to the Empire Pool, Wembley; the Empress Hall, Earls Court, and the Harringay Arena.
Consequently, fewer Streatham match programmes were ever produced, compared to the likes of the Wembley Lions and Harringay Racers, and even fewer have survived to today, making them eagerly sought after by collectors of ice hockey ephemera.
The programme is complete, with some notation in pencil to the scoring pages.
The squads for this game were:
STREATHAM
CANADA (SUDBURY WOLVES)
