Manchester United v Manchester City 1970
1970/71 Football Benefit Match Programme.
George Best played in this game.
A Commemorative programme from the testimonial match for Manchester United legend Bill Foulkes. The match was between United and Manchester City and was held on 10th November 1970 at Old Trafford. Some great names are on the team sheet..Best, Charlton, Kidd, Lee, Bell, Summerbee etc. Bill Foulkes joined Man. United in 1950 as a junior. He rose through the ranks to become Matt Busby’s first choice centre half.
He survived the Munich air crash, helping Bobby Charlton and other team mates to safety in the aftermath. In the semi final of the European Cup in 1968 Man U. were drawing 3-3 away against Real Madrid. George Best put a cross in and, of all people, Foulkes put the ball in the net to send United to the final at Wembley. The rest is history. It must have been fate because that was one of only 9 goals he scored in 688 appearances. Bill Foulkes was a true United legend. He died in 2013, in Manchester, aged 81. This programme commemorates a match that was a fitting tribute to one of the game’s great servants.
